Fluency Practice - The Reading Race

After reading a post by Laura at The Grade Two Zoo, I was excited to try "The Great Poetry Reading Race" with my kids. Laura has some great printables to use. I wanted to use decodable stories from our reading series, Harcourt Storytown, so I tweaked her forms just a little and I'm just calling it "The Reading Race".

I also decided to try and time my kids on Mondays and Fridays and let them graph their words per minute (Monday in red and Friday in blue) to show their progress each week. I put it all together into fluency folders for them to take home each night. My kids have been excited and are even reading their stories in stations to each other.

Here are some pics and the forms to download.

  1. I love the idea of having students graph their results! I've been working with my kiddos on cwpm and I think having them graph the results would be very motivating!

Second... I'm so glad I found your blog - you teach Storytown, too!! Have you ever felt like all these great bloggie ladies teach Reading Street and then you can't use their stuff?? :) I have!

Thannks for this idea... I'm thinking this will make a great school-to-home connection next year!

  4. When do you start this folder? Also, Do you just type the story and place it in their folder and then remove it on Friday? I am switching from kindergarten to first grade and this sounds like a great idea. Do you mind expanding on the procedure party? Also, do you time them? Thanks so much!!!!

  5. Chrissy, I didn't start this until after spring break this year (that's when I found the idea on someone else's blog!). But I would start it much earlier, maybe after Christmas or even after the first quarter for next year. There is a website that already has all the stories that go with my reading series typed, so I just print from there. And I did time them (1 min.) on Monday and then on Friday. I really would suggest asking a parent volunteer to do this because it is time consuming! I didn't get to every child on Mondays and had do some on Tuesdays. So if you have an assistant or sweet parent get them to listen and time the kids. I hope that answers your questions!

  6. I love this idea. Fluency is always so hard to have kids practice at home and this is perfect. Thanks for the idea. I will be trying this with my firsties next year.
